How old are you?
34
What is your regular job?
Corporate lawyer
How long have you been attending BMF?
Since the first class on Hampstead Heath - three and a half years?
What first made you attend the classes?
Recommendation from a fellow masochist
Why have you stayed with BMF?
The results. The instructors tread a skilful line between the use of military discipline and motivational techniques, and acknowledgment that we are civilians, not soldiers! They also ensure that everyone gets pushed to his or her own limits. The result is the fun of a group session with more personalised motivation from the instructor. In any event, running around on open parkland chasing a guy in combats beats a treadmill or weights session in the gym any day.
What do you enjoy most about the classes?
Variety - no two classes are ever the same; solidarity - knowing that, however dead I feel, there is someone else in the class who feels equally as awful; and camaraderie - we look out for one another in the group and I think there have only been a couple of sessions when we came back with fewer people than we set off with...
What aspect(s) do you least enjoy about the classes?
Leopard-crawling up Parliament Hill in the pitch dark, wind and rain.
How much has your fitness and health improved since you started the classes?
Considerably. When I train on my own, I tend to play to my strengths and neglect my areas of weakness. Each BMF session is structured to provide an effective, rounded work-out, which has given me a much more balanced overall fitness than I had before I started.
What would you say to anyone who was thinking about taking a free class with BMF?
Stop thinking of reasons not to do it ... and get your kit on!
