Fitness Assessment

The BMF Fitness Assessment is a series of exercises against the clock based on the Army Fitness Test, which we have adapted to suit our membership. It is voluntary, and can be used as a way of monitoring your progress whilst training with British Military Fitness. We recommend that you attend a Fitness Assessment every three months as there is no point in doing any fitness training if it is not quantified.

Assessments are held in your park every month and your instructor will give you plenty of notice so you can take part. Check your venue page for the day and time of the Assessment for your venue. Assessments run alongside normal classes so you choose whether or not you wish to do it. You can of course attend classes at any park.

Rest assured there is no need to complete a Fitness Assessment before you attend your free trial but the table below gives a rough idea of which ability level you will probably start at.

The Assessment

The instructor will take you for a short warm up and then explain the assessment prior to starting.

The Assessment is a great workout in itself and consists of five disciplines designed to test strength and stamina:

  • 1. A timed 1500 meter individual run (best effort)

Maximum repetitions over a two minute period for each of:

  • 2. Press ups
  • 3. Sit-ups
  • 4. Burpees
  • 5. 15 x 20 metre shuttle sprints (best effort)

Each of the five disciplines is marked out of 100, see below.

The scoring system is as follows:

Exercise 1500m Run Press Ups Sit ups Burpees Shuttle Sprints
HPS Points 100 100 100 100 100
Novices Level 12.19 - 7.40 mins 1-20 Reps** 1-37 Reps 1-14 Reps 200-99 Secs

You will receive an email after your fitness assessment detailing your results.

Which bib colour should you take?

Beginner Groups (Blue Bibs)

For those people that currently do little or no exercise OR are returning to fitness training after a break. For example, after having given birth or returning from a medical condition. We work to the weakest member of the group. This level bib is for anyone to try, and at the bigger venues we do several levels of beginners classes. There is nothing to be afraid of!

Intermediate Groups (Red Bibs)

For those who have worked their way up from our novice groups or those joining us who have a reasonable standard of fitness already. Intermediate classes are either a great way to keep weight off OR a great way to step up to more challenging classes, depending on the kind of person you are!

Advanced Groups (Green Bibs)

Where the fittest members will be put through a very intensive session. Separate advanced classes are run at most of our venues. The sessions are highly rated by the sports men and women that attend them who are looking to get pushed beyond anything they have experienced before. A great way of cross training for people who have no fear!
